24th May 2024 News

The Calder and Colne Landscape Links (CCaLL) project is an exciting initiative aimed at restoring and enhancing natural habitats in the Calderdale and Kirklees areas. Here are some key details about this project:

  • Project Goals: The CCaLL project aims to create a rich, climate-resilient mosaic of functionally connected habitats that link valley towns with moorland tops within the Calderdale and Kirklees district. The project focuses on planning and designing nature-based solutions to deliver environmental benefits across the Calder and Colne river catchments.
  • Funding: The project has secured grant funding from various sources:
    • £750,000 from the second round of the Government’s Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) Landscape Recovery programme.
    • £100,000 from the Yorkshire Regional Flood and Coastal Committee.
  • Partnership and Collaboration: The project is a collaborative effort involving several organisations:
    • Calderdale and Kirklees Councils
    • Calder and Colne Rivers Trust
    • Environmental Projects in Kirklees (EPIKs)
    • Moors for the Future Partnership
    • Support from the Environment Agency
  • Project Scope: The restoration efforts will cover approximately 10,000 hectares of the Colne and Upper Calder Valley. Specific actions include, restoring moorlands, creating wildlife-rich habitats, and planting trees.

Overall, the CCaLL project represents a significant effort to enhance biodiversity, combat climate change, and improve flood resilience in the region.
