The key dangers of driving through floodwater

Floodwater can hide potholes, damaged road surfaces, debris, and even open manholes, making it impossible to know what lies beneath the surface.
Just 30cm of moving water can float an average family-sized car, causing a loss of traction and control.
Water displaced by vehicles can be pushed onto pavements and into nearby properties, potentially causing avoidable flooding and damage.
Vehicles travelling through floodwater can create waves that splash pedestrians and cyclists or put them at risk.
Even shallow floodwater can enter a vehicle’s air intake and cause serious, costly damage to the engine.
Water on the road can lead to aquaplaning, where tyres lose contact with the road surface, reducing steering and braking control.
Splashing pedestrians with surface water could be considered driving without reasonable consideration for other road users, which may result in a fine and penalty points.
