Halifax Rack and Screw Cutting Co Limited (HRS), established in 1953, stands as one of Europe’s premier manufacturers and suppliers of precision-engineered gear racks and screws. With over six decades of experience, HRS has consistently expanded its reach and exports globally.
But in late 2015, Storm Desmond wreaked havoc in Brighouse, flooding businesses along the River Calderdale. HRS, situated behind the river, faced a dire situation: three to four feet of floodwater submerged their premises. The sudden damage highlighted the vulnerability of residents and businesses in Calderdale during flood events. Rainfall in this storm broke all previous UK records.
Despite the floodwaters, HRS demonstrated remarkable resilience and adaptability. Within a year, HRS proactively invested in robust flood resilience measures. A concrete wall was erected around the entire external boundary of the building and then fronted with brick for aesthetics. Ten flood doors were strategically placed across the site, providing a barrier against any future flood events. Downpipes with closures for heavy rain and penstocks attached to drains ensure water can't backflow through toilets. The company raised critical machinery to prevent flood damage, allowing business continuity even after flooding. The inside floors were all concreted to minimise water absorption, significantly reducing damage caused by further flooding.
Putting the flood barriers in place takes approximately two hours, with a team of 2-3 staff members. This now streamlined process ensures swift protection during heavy rain or flood events. During Storm Ciara in 2020, when 100mm of rain fell within a 12–18-hour period, the flood defences at proved effective, and again in late 2023 when Storm Gerrit hit. The building remained unflooded, demonstrating the resilience of its flood prevention measures.
