Local, regional, and national leaders came together in Halifax for the West Yorkshire Flood Summit, hosted by Calderdale Council at the end of November 2025. The event marked ten years since Storm Eva and the devastating Boxing Day floods of 2015.
The event was a decisive moment of reflection and continued commitment to reducing flood risk across the region. Ten years on, the emotional and physical impacts of the floods are still felt, but so too is the strength of the communities that came together in the face of adversity.
At the event, we launched the West Yorkshire Flood Pledge — a shared commitment to protecting our communities and strengthening our response to flooding. The pledge focuses on three key priorities:
• Securing long-term investment to support flood resilience
• Empowering local flood groups and communities to lead the way
• Championing nature-based solutions that work with our landscapes
The summit celebrated the progress made over the past decade — from stronger flood defences and natural flood management to community-led resilience efforts — and looked ahead to the challenges posed by climate change.

Following the event, Calderdale Council joined the Environment Agency in showing Emma Hardy, Minister for Water and Flooding the Mytholmroyd Flood Alleviation Scheme (FAS) along with Calder Valley MP Josh Fenton-Glynn, and Council leaders. This £41 million scheme, completed in 2021, provides better protection for around 400 properties in Mytholmroyd – a vital step in reducing flood risk and building community resilience.
