Slow the Flow at Hardcastle Crags & Broadhead Clough

22nd January 2026 News

Broadhead Clough and Hardcastle Crags are two of Calderdale’s most treasured landscapes. The Yorkshire Wildlife Trust cares for Broadhead Clough, the National Trust manages the iconic Hardcastle Crags nearby.

Natural Flood Management in Action

Since 2016, Slow The Flow volunteers have worked across both sites to reduce flood risk. By using Natural Flood Management (NFM) techniques, they help protect downstream communities.

Key achievements include:

  • 1,000+ Leaky Dams: Installed at Hardcastle Crags to slow water during heavy rain.

  • Habitat Restoration: Revitalising wet woodlands at Broadhead Clough.

  • Boosting Biodiversity: Improving local wildlife through active woodland management.

  • Better Data: Installing a community weather station and flow monitors to track water levels in real-time.

Proven Results

The impact of this work is clear. At Hardcastle Crags, these natural interventions can delay flood peaks by up to 105 minutes. This vital extra time allows local residents to prepare for rising water. At Broadhead Clough, early results show healthier habitats and growing resilience against flooding.
