Yorkshire Regional Flood and Coastal Committee meeting

8th May 2026 News

In April, the Yorkshire Regional Flood and Coastal Committee (RFCC) met in Calderdale. The session included a site visit to see flood protection work in Brighouse.

What is the RFCC?

Created by the Flood and Water Management Act 2010, the RFCC connects local leaders with technical experts. Together, they:

  • Oversee flood and coastal erosion risks.

  • Coordinate plans across the region.

  • Guide investments to help local communities.

  • Strengthen ties between the Environment Agency and local partners.

Key Discussions

The meeting focused on the region’s biggest challenges, specifically new government funding rules. Members discussed how to spend “local levy” funds effectively to get the best results for residents.

Brighouse Site Visit

During the trip, members viewed the Brighouse Flood Alleviation Scheme. This project protects the area by:

  1. Storing water upstream.

  2. Improving river defences.

  3. Widening channels.

  4. Boosting the local environment at Clifton Beck.
