NFM – shaping our project pipeline

13th July 2026 News

On Friday 26th June, partners and stakeholders came together at Halifax Town Hall for the Calder Catchment Natural Flood Management (NFM) Workshop. The room reached full capacity and despite the hot summer weather, everyone was highly focused. Attendees shared their expertise and mapped out new ways to protect our valleys using nature-based solutions. The workshop brought local partners together. The goal was to build a coordinated pipeline of NFM projects. The high level of engagement showed a massive local appetite for this work. The group discussed several natural methods to slow down rainwater. These include:

  • Leaky dams to hold back water in upland streams.
  • Planting across slopes to help rainwater soak into the ground.
  • Reviving peatlands to act as natural sponges in the landscape.
Working together to unlock national Natural Flood Management (NFM) funding

The event highlighted the government’s new flood funding policy, which includes a framework for funding Natural Flood Management (NFM). DEFRA has committed at least £300 million in funding for NFM over 10 years. The session emphasised that collaboration is essential. To receive this national funding, individual projects cannot work in isolation. Instead, neighbours and groups in the same river catchment must submit joint applications.
