How and why to grow sphagnum moss

9th April 2026 News

The Calderdale Sphagnum Project is expanding, and we need your help. Most of our local peatlands are in poor condition but you can help us fix them.

Come to our free workshop at Cromwell Bottom Nature Reserve on 18th April (10am–12pm) to learn how to grow the moss that protects our community from floods, fires, and carbon release.

  • Date and time: 18th April | 10am – 12pm
  • Location: Cromwell Bottom Nature Reserve
  • Cost: Free

Why Sphagnum Matters:

  • Climate Change: It traps carbon by stopping plant decomposition.
  • Flood Prevention: It acts as a natural sponge, slowing water flow off our hillsides.
  • Fire Protection: Healthy, wet peatlands are less susceptible to moorland fires.
