Cottonstones Mill Pond: Strengthening Flood Resilience

13th April 2026 News

Cottonstones Mill Pond, a historic former mill dam in the hamlet of Cottonstones, Calderdale, is undergoing significant improvement works to address long‑standing structural concerns. Fed by Lumb Clough and Sparable Clough, the pond plays a key role in managing local water flows and protecting nearby homes from flooding.

In response to deterioration of the existing spillway and increased flood risk, Calderdale Council began major construction works in December 2025. The project includes upgrading the spillway, improving flow control, removing accumulated silt, and installing new infrastructure to manage debris and water levels more effectively. These works represent an important investment in community safety, flood resilience, and environmental protection.
