Brearley Fields in the Guardian: A wetland waiting its turn

It might feel more like a meadow than a wetland right now, but Brearley Fields is just biding its time. In this week’s Country Diary for The Guardian, Richard Smyth paints a vivid picture of the site in its dry-season lull, grasshoppers buzzing, thistles brushing your ankles, and barely a puddle in sight. But as locals know, this floodplain in Mytholmroyd is built for wetter days. When the River Calder swells, Brearley Fields comes into its own soaking up water, easing flood risk, and supporting wildlife.
