In April, the Environment Agency’s Calderdale team welcomed international colleagues to the Calder Upper Valley as part of the Levee Safety Partnership which is a global collaboration between experts from the Netherlands, the United States, and the UK. The partnership brings together engineers and researchers to share knowledge and tackle emerging challenges in flood risk management.
The visit began at Crimsworth Dean, Hardcastle Crags, where the National Trust led an inspiring tour showcasing their work in Natural Flood Management. Attendees gained valuable insight into how nature-based solutions are helping to reduce flood risk while enhancing the local environment.
The group then travelled to Hebden Bridge to explore the proposed flood alleviation scheme, discussing both its benefits and challenges. Conversations also highlighted innovative approaches from across the partnership, including lessons from the New Orleans flood defence scheme.
The visit was a great success, with excellent feedback and meaningful knowledge exchange throughout. It demonstrated the value of collaboration in driving forward innovative and effective flood risk solutions.
The Environment Agency extends thanks to Calderdale Council, Yorkshire Water, the National Trust, BAM, Arup, and Mott MacDonald for their support.
