26th June 2026 News

The White Rose Forest is celebrating a highly successful 2025–2026 planting season, delivering widespread benefits for communities across Yorkshire through its Government funded Trees for Climate programme.

From improving local air quality and creating greener public spaces to reducing flood risk and supporting education, this year’s planting has put people at the heart of nature recovery, helping to create healthier, more resilient places to live, visit and work in.

Headline achievements for 2025–2026 planting season:
  • 450,800 trees planted (436 hectares or approximately 610 international football pitches)
  • 17,816 metres of hedgerows planted
  • 9,689 people engaged in planting and related activities
  • 2.7 kilometres of new footpaths created
  • £8 million of grant funding invested in Yorkshire

Working in partnership with landowners, local and regional authorities and communities, the White Rose Forest has continued to expand tree cover, restore landscapes and bring nature closer to people. Every project supports the White Rose Forest partnership’s long-term vision to create a more prosperous Yorkshire that is resilient to our changing climate, improves community health and wellbeing and supports nature recovery.

The White Rose Forest has supported 92 woodland creation projects this season, including:

Improving public spaces in West Yorkshire town centres

New tree planting in the town centres including Hebden Bridge. Tree planting will help transform the experience for everyone visiting these important public spaces, providing shade, improving air quality and enhancing wellbeing.

Community-led planting at Top O’ Th’ Hill

At Top O’ Th’ Hill near Todmorden, local volunteers have helped plant the White Rose Forest’s first directly managed site, strengthening community stewardship of this green space and improving connectivity with existing woodland.

A group of eleven smiling volunteers of various ages pose together outdoors on a grassy field, holding shovels and tools for a tree planting event. A golden retriever sits with them, and newly planted saplings in protective guards are visible in the background.

Landowners in North and West Yorkshire can contact the White Rose Forest team for funding and support to deliver a wide variety of woodland creation projects. The Trees for Climate funding will cover up to 100% of project and establishment costs.
