Create a
Flood Pack

Put together a kit of essential items you’ll need to hand when it floods. These packs will vary depending on your circumstances, but basic essential items remain the same.

Flood Pack Essentials

It is a good idea to keep a flood pack with essential items should a flooding event occur. The pack should be in an easily accessible area and as many people as possible should know where to find it.

A flood pack should contain the following items as a minimum:

  • Torch
  • Portable radio to monitor local news and weather broadcasts
  • Copies of important documents including passport, insurance certificates and your flood plan
  • Important phone numbers and your Useful Contacts sheet
  • Batteries for your torch and radio
  • Medicines including hearing devices and glasses
  • Dry, waterproof clothing
  • First aid kit
  • Mobile phone
  • Non-perishable food and kitchen utensils
  • Blankets
  • Bottled water
  • Cash
Contents of a flood pack including, a torch, a battery operated radio, knife and fork, bottled water, tinned food and a first aid kit.
Food and drink supplies

The flood pack should contain everything you may need in case you are trapped in your property for a few days. Ideally this should include food and drink supplies for at least three days per person in the property.

Water

You should store water in plastic containers such as soft drink bottles. Avoid using containers that will decompose or break, such as milk cartons or glass bottles. An active person needs to drink at least four pints of water each day. Hot environments and intense physical activity can double that amount. Children, nursing mothers and people who are unwell will need more.

Store eight pints of water per person per day (four pints for drinking and four pints for food preparation/sanitation).

Food

Your flood pack should include a supply of non-perishable food. Select foods that:

  • Require no refrigeration, preparation or cooking
  • Need little or no water
  • Are compact and lightweight
