Citizens’ Jury calls for action

29th May 2025 News

With over 75,000 homes in Calderdale rated below EPC band C, retrofitting is vital to meet the borough’s 2038 net zero target and protect communities from the growing impacts of climate change. A Citizens’ Jury, made up of local homeowners, spent 23 hours over six sessions exploring retrofit solutions with expert input. Their 14 key recommendations include:

• Creating a One Stop Shop for retrofit advice

• Developing local standards for Calderdale’s diverse housing stock

• Strengthening the local supply chain for retrofit services

• Simplifying planning permissions for energy upgrades

• Promoting green mortgages and better access to finance

These community-led ideas aim to create warmer homes, lower energy bills, and a more resilient Calderdale, especially as climate change increases the risk of extreme weather and flooding. Read more about what causes flooding in Calderdale.
