The biological control trial has now started. In order to help the trial's success, it would be appreciated if you could limit the pulling of balsam in Colden Clough to only those areas which have been worked upon in the past two years.
Having said that please do continue to go out and pull balsam should the mood take you. There's plenty of it out there!
While you're in the woods you might want to look out for signs of the rust, infected plants will appear taller than their neighbors, have an irregular stem form, and they will have white undersides to their leaves and brown speckles on the leaf surface. Please do let me know if you see any of these signs around the valley.
As in previous years, I'm planning to have a balsam bash from 9:30-12:30 at the old bridge at the top of Colden Clough on Sunday the 21st and 28th June where we're beginning to see the benefit of years of work. Please wear long sleeves and trousers and bring gloves if you've got them. If there are days or dates which would better suit people, please let me know and I'll try to co-ordinate something.
